We’ve gotten some feedback from folks asking why we run columns written by folks from other places. One man even said to me, “Why do I care what somebody in another part of the world has to say?”
OK...so here’s why...
Those columns are written by other editors and writers from our sister papers at CNHI, and we support one another by utilizing their writing. CNHI has a news wire, which we use for some state news as well as opinion columns. You will notice that the columns we use, although they may be written by someone “in another part of the world,” have value to our community. They are about issues that matter to us, or are content that we can all relate to.
We’ll also be writing columns on the issues, whether they be local or of a larger scale.
Another change we’re making is that our travel page, which has been around quite a while, is moving to Tifton Scene magazine.
OK...so here’s why...
In an effort to better utilize the resources we have, so that we can continue to produce the best possible product for you each day, we’re cutting costs wherever possible. One of these cuts has come in the form of reducing the number of our pages a couple of days each week.
In the newspaper “bidness,” when you begin cutting pages and/or content, the first thing to go is features. News is king in this biz, and features don’t often get the spotlight. We do want to continue to offer features, however, so we’ll do them as often as we can. But we will focus on news first.
I think Tifton Scene is a great fit for this valuable feature. We know many of you enjoy the travel page, so now you can enjoy it in a much “purtier” environment. You will be able to see travel content, written by Christine Tibbetts, who you all know and love, in the May/June Tifton Scene.
Change is never easy, and growing pains are called pains because, well, they’re painful. But we’re in this together. And we’ll all come out better, together, on the other side.

Identity Theft: Do all you can to protect your credit, debit cards
Pictured are a couple of skimmers, used here on an ATM machine and gas pump. The devices usually fit right over the original card reader or key pad, but are loose when tugged.
It's summertime and there may be only two words on your mind – road trip. As we hit the roads this summer for vacations we all make stops at the gas station and the ATM.

Unfortunately, so do identity thieves. They set up machines called skimmers on gas pumps and ATMs that are designed to fool you and benefit them. The devices read your debit or credit card and record the number, which the thief can collect by retrieving the skimmer or even remotely using a smartphone and a wireless Internet connection. The information will then be used to create a duplicate card bearing the number, but a different name. - Tift Sheriff’s Office investigating scam

Fields played, coached three eras of basketball
Imagine a player averaging 29 points per game for a career and receiving no college scholarship offers. That happened to Dona Fields.
Fields, as Dona Gaskins, is easily Berrien High's all-time leading scorer. She scored her 1,000th point as a sophomore and during her last three seasons was the Rebelettes' leading scorer in every game. She received no college attention, no offers. - Kilgore resigns baseball post at ABAC
