TIFTON —
Deviner McCray was dazzling on the mound for the Tift County Blue Devils against the Camden County Wildcats Friday, but his opposition was just as strong and the Cats took a 2-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader.
McCray allowed four hits and a single earned run while striking out five before being relieved in the seventh inning by Cole Bennett. The first few innings were a duel between he and Wyatt Holloway, who took the mound for Camden.
After walking the first batter of the game, McCray got a double play from the next hitter. The Cats gave him no more trouble until the third, when Ryan Thompson singled and stole second with two outs in the frame. It looked like he would get out of the inning with no trouble, but when Cody Ilgeafritz grounded to third, the throw to first skipped past Blake Suggs into right field, allowing Thompson to score.
An infield hit advanced Thompson to third, but he was then caught in a rundown to end the threat.
McCrary breezed through the fourth and faced another jam in the fifth when the leadoff hitter doubled and was moved to third on a sacrifice. McCrary struck out the next batter before getting a flyout for the third out.
Chandler Cross drove in Camden’s other run with a single in the sixth, after a one-double was advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Holloway kept Tift’s bats silent for most of the game. The Devils looked to have their first hit in the third, but Bobby Hughes was robbed by a diving stop by the second baseman. The next man up, Zeke Dodson, looked to have sparked a rally when he walked and got into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Camden struck out Briggs Benson to end the inning.
The Devils’ first hit would not come until the bottom of the fifth when Zack Bullard singled to lead off the inning. However, he would be stranded at second after a consecutive groundouts and a popup.
A two-out gap double by Suggs in the sixth would be the only other hit for Tift County.
The second game against Camden on Friday was completed after presstime.
The Blue Devils’ 9th grade team plays at Bainbridge Saturday in a doubleheader, with the first pitch of the first game at 1 p.m. The varsity next sees action on Tuesday when they host Lee County at 6 p.m.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
