Fire claims van at off-ramp

TIFTON — A van erupted in flames Monday morning on the ramp off Exit 55, heading southbound, in Eldorado.

Lt. Tommy Garren at the Tifton-Tift County Fire Department said the incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. He said the 1997 Dodge van belonged to local company Moorman Painting. He said workers with the company (he wasn’t sure how many) were driving and they noticed smoke was coming from the engine area. He said they pulled off to the side of the road and exited the van and contacted 911.

Garren said the company recently purchased the vehicle and turned it into a work van. He said it took approximately 5 minutes at most to extinguish the fire. The van is a complete loss, he said.

Garren said no one was injured, and the cause of the fire is undetermined. He confirmed that the fire did start in the engine area.
