Wilkinson edges Turner in 2 OT

TIFTON — South Georgia girls’ teams had a mixed day in the state tournament quarterfinals Tuesday.

Turner County’s Lady Rebels took the Wilkinson county Lady Warriors to two overtimes in Irwinton, but fell, 76-74. Wilkinson plays Randolph-Clay in the semifinals.

The Valdosta Lady Wildcats were down early to Langston Hughes, but battled to take them to overtime before finally succumbing, 57-56. Langston Hughes next plays Norcross.

Region 1-AA split their battles. Thomasville’s girls advanced with a 62-48 win over Bleckley County and next play Wesleyan in the final four. Pelham’s season ended at the hands of the undefeated Laney Lady Wildcats.

The southern half of the 1962 Class AA girls state hoops tournament was played in Fitzgerald, despite Fitzgerald having dropped their girls program in 1957.
