TIFTON —
An Advanced Disaster Life Support drill was held Friday afternoon inside the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center. The scene was set up in the conference center’s large theater.
Advanced Disaster Life Support offers an advanced practicum for individuals who have completed BDLS. This intensive, operations-level course trains participants in mass-casualty decontamination, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), SALT (sort, assess, lifesaving interventions, treatment/transport) triage and the application of critical lifesaving interventions. Through the use of interactive sessions and exercises with high-fidelity mannequins and volunteer patients, the course creates a realistic, practical experience in mass-casualty management. The two-day course includes both classroom and hands-on training.
The course also introduces concepts and principles to prepare health professionals for the management of injuries and illness caused by disasters and public health emergencies. The primary focus of this course is to apply the principles and concepts of mass-casualty management and population-based care to natural disasters, traumatic and explosive events, nuclear and radiologic events and biological and chemical events. The course addresses the role of health professionals in the incident management system, the physical and psychosocial implications of disaster events and the special needs of underserved and vulnerable populations.
Friday’s scene represented some of the recent acts that have happened across the United States. Tift Regional Medical Center and the Department of Public Health sponsored last week’s course. The scene was a simulated bomb explosion in a theater with multiple causalities. The causalities for the exercise were from the Tift County Drama Club as well as a few professional actors from the Atlanta area. The production company brought their own makeup artist with them to help put “realistic injuries” on the actors. The students and actors brought a very real atmosphere to the drill. The lights were off and fake smoke was also used to add realism to the event. The class had 52 students from all over the state attending this three-day course. The realism that came Friday only helps the local first responders and receivers prepare for what may happen in the future.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
