TIFTON —
A 22,000-square foot strand steel produce packing shed is a total loss after it caught fire Tuesday afternoon.
The owner said the shed is located on his farm, which he shares ownership of with another family member. The farm is located in the 300 block of Isabella Nashville Road. The owner said he and an employee were at the farm when the fire started inside the shed, and they contacted 911.
According to Fire Chief Mike Coleman at the Tifton-Tift County Fire Department, the fire department was dispatched at approximately 1:37 p.m. He said it took quite a while to get the fire under control. Coleman said waxed cardboard boxes used to package produce that were inside the facility had caught on fire, and this made it difficult for them to suppress the fire. He added the boxes were stacked flat.
Coleman said firefighters couldn’t do an interior attack because it was too risky. The steel structure began to bend. Therefore, they had to do an exterior attack to gain access to the fire. This approach is called “defensive operation.”
Coleman said the county’s Public Works Department was a tremendous help in tearing off the siding of the building so firefighters could get to the fire. He said there was one small flare-up Tuesday night, which they were able to suppress. He advised that this is common.
No one was injured in the fire, said Coleman, and the facility is partially collapsed. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
