Matt Wilson Elementary students learn it’s all in the genes

TIFTON — Students in teachers Julie Gunn and Dana Foster’s Resource classes at Matt Wilson Elementary School are extending the standard in science for understanding how offspring can resemble their parents in inherited traits. Through their unit of study, students have become familiar with vocabulary words such as chromosomes, genes, DNA, dominant, recessive, alleles, genotype, phenotype, pure and hybrid. During the month of February each student built a model of a chromosome and a model of a molecule of DNA to help them understand how these are unique structures responsible for passing down inherited traits from parents to offspring. Pictured are students Sheranda Merriweather and Aeriel Lewis creating a DNA model using marshmallows and candy
