TIFTON —
The Turner County Rebels’ shooting star came down to earth last Friday. After rocketing through the first part of their season, they met defeat in Rochelle at the hands of the Wilcox County Patriots, 38-0.
Turner was held to just 64 total yards while the Patriots racked up a 21-0 halftime lead and plenty of offense from one player alone. Quarterback Makail Grace threw for 335 yards and four touchdowns, rushed for another and contributed to his team’s defensive efforts with an interception.
The Rebels only completed one of their 14 passes for eight yards and contributed to their own problems with four turnovers.
“There was not a lot we could do with them,” said Turner head coach Erik Soliday. “They just outplayed us.”
If there is any solace for Soliday, none of his players were injured against the Patriots.
The Rebels continue their region schedule this week against the Telfair County Trojans at McRae. Their coach believes it will be a chance for them to rebound.
“It’s a big game for us and we have to get back on track after last week,” Soliday said.
Turner had begun their year 5-1, including a victory over Class AAAA Crisp County. They rolled over their first two region opponents, Lanier County and Charlton County, by a combined scored of 61-6 and were off to their best start since 2008, when they began 7-1 and advanced all the way to the state quarterfinals.
Telfair County started off red hot, accumulating a 3-1 record and wins over Wheeler County, Baconton Charter and Southeast Bulloch. Then the Trojans ran into their Region 2-A schedule and have dropped consecutive games to Clinch County, 17-9, and Irwin County, 55-21. Even so, they are off to their best start since 2008, which is also the final time they recorded more than three wins in a season.
The Irwin County contest was two weeks ago and the last time Telfair saw game action. They were idle last week, giving them extra time to rest for Turner, whose two region wins put them in a four-way tie for tops in the region. Irwin leads the pack as their two wins are stacked up against zero losses.
Soliday said the Trojans’ off-week will not affect his squad’s preparations, though he was positive Telfair was using the time off to adjust their offense.
He said his own practices this week would be attempts to get back in the grove.
“Hopefully, we’ll get better,” he said.
Next week, Turner will get to return to their home turf when Irwin County comes to town for a big region showdown at Hobby Field.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
