TIFTON —
The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes won a tough battle over the Early County Bobcats, 17-14, in a Region 1-AA matchup Friday night.
Fitzgerald, 7-2 overall, 4-1 in the league, can clinch second place in 1-AA with a win this week over the Thomasville Bulldogs. That game will be played at Fitzgerald’s Jaycee Stadium.
The Canes’ Romarius Gaulden led his team to the win over Early. The junior quarterback scored both Fitzgerald touchdowns and accounted for 153 yards rushing on 17 carries.
His first touchdown came with 10:24 left in the first quarter as he broke loose on a 50-yard scamper to delight his home crowd.
That was the Canes’ only score of the first half, but Early did have a late second quarter score to make the halftime score, 7-7.
Gaulden would give the Canes the lead back though on a 31-yard scoring run with 3:29 left in the third quarter.
Early proved pesky though and tied the score again with 7:29 left in the game.
Fitzgerald’s Manuel Sanchez would then kick what turned out to be the game-winning field goal when his 40-yarder split the uprights with 2:52 left in the game.
The Hurricanes would then have to hold their breath as the game ended as Early barely missed a 33-yard field goal as the gun sounded to end the contest.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
