TIFTON —
After defeating a tough Charlton County Indians team last week, the Turner County Rebels have another big game tonight when they play the Wilcox County Patriots on the road.
Turner made it look easy last week, knocking off Charlton, 38-6.
“It was nice to finally beat them,” said Soliday.
The win was a long time coming for the Rebels. It was their first victory over Charlton since 1993. They had lost their last four against the Indians.
This week’s contest sees the Rebels journey up to Rochelle to meet a Wilcox County with a recent history of excellence. The Patriots have made the state playoffs for six straight seasons, including two trips to the finals. They lost to Emanuel County Institute in 2007, but defeated Savannah Christian in 2009.
“It’s an equally big game,” said Soliday.
Soliday praised Wilcox’s game on both sides of the ball. He was especially impressed with their quarterback and receivers, who play both offense and defense.
Turner is 4-1 and off to their best start since 2008. Other than a 34-32 blemish against Seminole County, they have rolled over all of their opponents, including a shutout victory over Class AAAA Crisp County.`
Wilcox’s 2012 campaign has had an up and down season, alternating wins and losses and they currently stand at 3-2. After opening with a 43-39 victory over Wilkinson County, they fell to Monroe of Albany, 28-14. The score was reversed in the next game against Dooly County and after an off week, they lost at Charlton County, 42-36. In their outing, they were able get back on the right track with a 40-0 shutout of Lanier County.
The Rebels will be attempting to hand the Patriots their third loss of the season. No one has been able to do that since 2006, when Wilcox finished 9-3.
“We have to stay as balanced as we can,” Soliday said.
“We have to stop their big plays as they make a lot of them.”
If Turner wins, they will sit all alone at the top of Region 2-A. Currently, the Rebels have a 2-0 region mark.

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
