TIFTON —
A week after a long road trip, the Tiftarea Academy Panthers will be the beneficiaries of a team on a long journey when they host the Bulloch Academy Gators tonight at the Panther Pit.
Bulloch is 5-1 this year, having had a winning streak broken last week by Deerfield-Windsor. Tiftarea will be attempting to rebound from a 21-14 loss in Bellville to the Pinewood Christian Patriots.
The Gators started off the season in red hot fashion, putting up plenty of offense. In their opener, they smashed up St. Andrews School, 52-35. Their next game saw a tight 21-20 win over Bethesda Day, but they struck back in impressive fashion with high-powered victories over Robert Toombs Academy, Trinity Christian and Brentwood School.
But the streak ended last week when they ran into a brick wall by the name of Deerfield-Windsor and lost by a 31-0 score.
The Knights dominated the Gators all evening, racking up 386 total yards with 351 coming from the ground game and accumulated all of their points in the first three quarters. Bulloch only mustered 123 yards of their own.
Tiftarea has seen plenty of close games, but have only had the breaks go in their favor once. Of their six losses, only one has been by more than 14 points.
Their opening game was a 28-14 loss to Terrell Academy, followed by a 39-25 defeat by Sherwood Christian Academy and a similar 27-14 loss to Southwest Georgia Academy. They cut it even closer against Brookwood School, 20-14. Following was their only non-close contest, a 57-0 game against Westwood School.
Fortunately, they were able to rebound with their first win of the year, a 28-12 homecoming victory over the Crisp Academy Wildcats.
Last week was certainly no exception to the pattern of close losses.
After falling behind 21-0 to Pinewood Christian, the Panthers started their rally. They managed to cut the lead to 21-14 with 51 seconds left in the game, but were unable to recover an onside kick and the game ended with that margin.
Next week, the Panthers will be on the move again when they tackle the Southland Academy Golden Raiders in Americus.
