The Tiftarea Academy Panthers, coached by Tommie Koran, finished out their cross country season in strong form.
The girls took the Region 1-AAA crown, the boys finished second. A week later, both teams did well at the state tournament.
Tiftarea’s girls were seven points better than their nearest competitor, Southland Academy, and their average time per runner was a full 10 seconds faster.
Placing individually were Neeli Fortson, who was third, Katherine McGarr (5th), Bree Harper (8th), Rachel Thomason (11th), Kaycee Goodman (12th), Dorian Garvey (13th) and Madison Smith (18th). Fortson only finished 14 seconds behind Chris Shattles of Southland, who won the event.
The Panther boys finished second in Region 1-AAA to Southland.
Matt Myers finished fourth with a time of 18:31:81. Others runners for Tiftarea were Luke Myers (8th), Shane Vandevelde (10th), Levi Moore (18th), Zach Willis (19th), Cam Baker (20th), and Dean Luke (25th).
Last weekend, both teams participated in the state tournament at Darton College in Albany.
At state, the Lady Panthers again ran well and finished fifth overall, region rival Southland taking first.
Fortson was her team’s best runner, coming in 19th. McGarr finished 29th, Harper, 35th, Goodman, 38th, Garvey 44th, Thompson 49th and Smith 50th. For Fortson, Harper, Goodman, Garvey and Smith, it was also a personal best time.
In boys’ competition at state, Tiftarea finished in ninth place.
Matt Myers finished 15th in his best time of the season, Luke Myers 39th, Vandevelde 49th, Willis 63rd, Baker 67th, and Moore 75th.
Tiftarea Academy expects to have another outstanding season next year.
Koran said that only two of his boys are graduating and the entire girls team will be returning.

Two from Tift named 1st team All-Region
The Tift County Blue Devils, who were only just barely eliminated in the state quarterfinals, placed two players on the All-Region team for 1-AAAAAA. The region, which sent three teams to the elite eight in the state tournament, named Lowndes’ Danny Redshaw Coach of the Year.
