TIFTON —
Tift County Commissioners voted Tuesday night to hire Jones Construction to value engineer the upcoming construction project to build a new public works facility.
The company, located in Tift County, will be paid a little more than $7,000 to look at the project and make the county aware of savings that can be taken advantage of.
The advantage to value engineering is that once a contractor provides a bid to the county, it is set in stone – there will be no surprises. The contractor must stick to the price presented.
The vote was unanimous to hire Jones Construction to value engineer the project, with Commissioner Sherry Miley, Dist. 4, abstaining. Miley’s son works for Jones Construction.
Commissioners also voted unanimously to change the tax refund amount policy. The current policy sets the amount at $2. Tuesday night’s vote changes the amount to $5.
Tax Commissioner Chad Alexander commented that with the rising cost of stamps, it is costly to mail them out.
If someone comes in to the tax office, however, seeking a refund for less than the set $5, Alexander said the refund will be made.
In other business, commissioners approved a beer license for Manish Patel for the EZ Mart in Brookfield.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
