TIFTON —
Hoops for Literacy, a basketball tournament with streetball rules, will be held Saturday at the Eighth Street Middle School gymnasium. Sponsored by Literacy Volunteers, the event is designed to provide clean fun and competition to young men aged 16-25 and to support LV’s educational programs.
“Streetball rules will apply,” said Dr. Charles Posey, LV director, “meaning the clock will run during the entire playtime and play is aggressive.” Georgia High School Association officials will referee.
Lester Cromer and Capt. Dennis Reese are co-chairmen of the event. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and play will start at 9 sharp. Twelve teams will play in double elimination brackets. Team players will receive jerseys and lunch tickets. The registration fee is $25 per team.
Cost for attending is $1 for adults. Children are admitted free.
“We are looking for sponsorships,” Dr. Posey said. To sponsor a team, the cost is $200 which pays registration fees, cost of jerseys, lunch for the team, and contributes toward the cost of the officials. To pay registration fees for an individual team, the cost is $25. To enter a team or secure a sponsorship, call LV at 229-382-0505 or Dr. Posey at 229-894-0455.
“This event will support literacy programs for young adults in Tiftarea. Since more than one-third of the young adult population, especially the black male population, lacks a high school diploma or GED, their opportunities are limited,” Dr. John Hamm, President of LV, said. “We want to reach out to this community and help them to make life-changing steps.”
LV and Moultrie Technical College will have program information available at the event. Other organizations which would like to have an information table should contact LV at 382-0505. “We would especially like to have an organization sponsor a table to take blood pressure,” Liz Carson Keiith, LV board member, said. “High blood pressure is a silent killer and may start in young adulthood.”
For more information, contact Posey at 229-382-0505.

Students challenge community, leaders to ‘stop the violence’
Eighth Street Middle School students chant "Keep calm and stop the violence" as they hold up signs in front of the school Tuesday morning for their peace rally.
“Keep calm and stop the violence,” “Save our streets” and “No more violence” were the words echoed by Eighth Street Middle School students early Tuesday morning as they stood in front of the school behind caution tape and orange cones, shouting and holding up signs as they waved at passing motorists who smiled and returned the gesture.

Gattis’ grand slam leads Braves past Twins 8-3
Evan Gattis no longer seems amazed by his improbable rookie season.
Yet, there are still times when it’s a bit of an adjustment for the Atlanta Braves catcher.
Like when someone recognizes him in the grocery store.
