The annual Outdoor Adventure Day and the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) “JAKES Day” event will be held at Paradise Public Fishing Area (PFA) on Saturday, Sept. 22. This event is held to celebrate the Annual National Hunting and Fishing Day, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. The Georgia Wildlife Resources Division and National Wild Turkey Federation invite the public to attend on this special day.
Activities available at this event include a adult-child fishing event at Lakes Cup and Saucer (Bring a child 15 years of age and under) with the Okefenokee Bass Anglers providing assistance to beginning anglers, instructional largemouth bass fishing excursions (reservation required- call 912-285-6094), DNR archery range, a fishing simulator sponsored by the Georgia Hunting and Fishing Federation, BB gun ranges sponsored by the Georgia Hunter Education Association and The Tift County 4H, skeet range using DNR provided 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, and many more wildlife-related exhibits.
Other happenings include a casting contest hosted by the Tifton Bassbusters, a search and rescue dog demonstration with the WRD canine unit, the ABAC Forestry Wildlife Exhibit, , Steve Scruggs - the “Snakemaster”, Mell Baptist Association free bottled water, and a FREE lunch provided by the National Wild Turkey Federation.
Fishing activities begin at 7:30 a.m., registration begins at 9 a.m., venues open at 10 a.m. and lunch is at 12 Noon. The day ends with a prize drawing (at 2 p.m.) for a shotgun and other prizes.
The U.S. Congress and President Nixon established National Hunting and Fishing Day on May 2, 1972 to recognize generations of hunters and anglers for the time and money they donate to wildlife conservation programs. Conserving the state’s natural and wildlife resources is one of the most important responsibilities for this and future generations and the conservation programs supported and financed by Georgia’s hunters and anglers have benefited hundreds of wildlife species, including deer, wild turkeys, bald eagles and songbirds for all Georgians to enjoy.
In addition to other events, a FREE fishing day is offered to all Georgia residents on Saturday, Sept. 22. On this day, residents do not need a fishing license or a trout license to fish on any public waters in the state including lakes, streams, ponds and public fishing areas (PFA). In addition, residents do not need to obtain a wildlife management area (WMA) license to fish on a PFA, WMA on this day.
Directions to Paradise PFA from Tifton: East on US Highway 82 for 8 miles to Brookfield. Turn right onto Whitley Road and travel approximately 100 yards; take the first left onto Brookfield-Nashville Road and travel 1.5 miles. Entrance to the area is on the left. TPD Lt. Steve Hyman recognized by Tifton Sertoma Club Thursday
Steve Hyman, an officer with the Tifton Police Department, is all smiles after receiving the Tifton Sertoma Club's 2013 Service to Mankind Award, presented by Chad Alexander, past president of the club.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason.
