TIFTON —
Tifton’s GFWC-20th Century Library Club was awarded Best Overall Club in the Second District at the annual district spring meeting recently held at the Thronateeska Heritage Center in Albany, hosted by the Junior Women’s Club of Albany. The award is given annually in recognition of outstanding service performed. Brenda Callaway, club president, accepted the award on behalf of the membership.
Tifton’s 20th Century Library brought home all the silver, receiving silver trays for first place in Arts, Conservation, Education, Home Life, International Issues and Public Issues. The club was also awarded the very first Domestic Violence Awareness Award. Club members Mary Harmon won the Short Story Award, while Genie McCook was presented the Poetry Award, and Kenda King, a Tift County High School student, won first place with her charcoal sketch, which will be entered in competition at the state convention in April.
“Our heads were spinning in the excitement of receiving all the department awards and Best Overall Club Award,” said Callaway, who added that it was thrilling to hear the club called up for award after award by Michele Bates, award chairman for GFWC-Georgia Second District.
Callaway also expressed gratitude to the members of the club and those who chaired departments for their faithful commitment to the club, as well as the community, district and state. Special appreciation was expressed to Mary Harmon, second vice-president, who Callaway said does an outstanding job of keeping the records of projects, volunteers and the hours contributed to club projects.
Others who attended the district gathering from Tifton were Harriet Herring, Genie McCook, Susan Saye, Lisa Smith and Debbie Thompson.
Mary Houseal, president of GFWC-Georgia Second District, presided over the meeting. Others who took part in the program were Dianne Barlow, public issues chairman, Bonnie Hardegree, president of Albany’s Junior Women’s Club, and guest speaker Maj. Kelly English, director of the Salvation Army.
The GFWC-20th Century Club has 36 members, and meets the second Tuesday of each month, September through May, at 2:30 p.m. in the Leroy Rogers Senior Center. All interested ladies are encouraged to attend.
