The Tiftarea Academy Lady Panthers softball team picked up wins away at Southwest Georgia Wednesday, and at home Thursday against Deerfield-Windsor.
Wednesday saw Brooke Keen pick up the win as the Lady Panthers defeated the Southwest Georgia Academy Lady Warriors, 5-4.
Keen struck out eight while only allowing one earned run.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Erin Register hit a one-out triple. After Lakyn Souter singled and stole second, Jarrett McWhorter drove both in. Souter had four hits, Rachel Davis had three hits and an RBI, Katy Johnson had two hits and an RBI and Lindsey Selph had two hits.
Tiftarea’s junior varsity squad also defeated Southwest Georgia, 4-3, to improve to 10-0. Ragen Lassiter gave up one run in two innings pitched. She was relieved by Hannah Gunter, who pitched three innings and allowed two runs. Gunter also contributed two hits and an RBI. Abby Carswell and Melissa McKay each had a triple. The Lady Warriors threatened to score in the bottom of the fitth, but shortstop Maci Paulk made a diving stop and threw to second to get a force out. After a walk put runners at first and second, Macy Strenth threw out the runner attempting to steal third to end the game.
On Senior Day in Chula Thursday, the Lady Panthers defeated the Deerfield-Windsor Lady Knights, 6-1, and improved to 19-6 on the season and 7-1 in the region. Tiftarea jumped out early with a 5-run first inning, stringing together five consecutive hits after a two-out walk to Madi Smith. Mackenzie McWhorter had the final hit inning with a single that scored two. The Lady Panthers scored their final run in the second inning when senior Katy Johnson reached on a base hit, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a groundout by Rachel Davis. Davis and Mackenzie McWhorter each had two hits and two RBIs.
Keen gave up a single unearned run and struck out eight. Souter played fine defense at shortstop with two diving stops, including one to strand a runner on second to end the first inning.
The Lady Panthers travel to Camilla Monday to play the Westwood Wildcats at 4 p.m. The next game for Tiftarea’s junior varsity is next Tuesday in Dawson.

I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital.We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
