TIFTON —
The University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences (UGA CAES) is hosting its annual Southwest Georgia informational event, the UGA Southwest District Event, Thursday.
Exhibits will open at 5 p.m. and the event will be held at the University of Georgia-Tifton Campus Conference Center in Tifton. This event provides students and parents with an opportunity to learn about the many degree programs within UGA CAES offered on three campus locations, Athens, Tifton and Griffin.
When asked about the success of the event in years past, Dr. Joe West, assistant dean of the UGA-Tifton Campus, said, “The Southwest District Event has been a great success for us because it’s a unique opportunity for prospective students and parents to come and get more information about the collegiate majors we offer, transfer options and meet some of our renowned faculty and staff in addition to some of our current students.”
UGA CAES offers 22 different majors ranging from Agribusiness to Water & Soil Resources. Three of the 22 majors prepare students for professional schools, such as medical school, veterinary school or law school, while the remaining majors prepare students for exciting careers in business, science, education, agriculture and many other areas.
UGA CAES professors will be at the event to answer major-specific questions from interested parents and students. In a time of economic uncertainty, many often wonder if a college degree is worth the investment.
In a recent article by Smart Money Magazine, the University of Georgia was ranked fourth nationally in return on investment. Still, some are left wondering about the chances of finding a job upon graduation and the statistics show that a degree from UGA CAES almost assures graduates of solid employment opportunities within their field of interest due to a thriving agricultural sector within the state of Georgia. Studies show that UGA CAES graduates rank fourth among highest employment rates university-wide and third in highest starting salaries.
The UGA Southwest District Event will offer separate designated information sessions for students interested in entering UGA as freshmen, as well as students who wish to transfer to UGA from other colleges. Representatives from UGA’s financial aid office will also be present to discuss information about scholarships and financial aid, in addition to any pertinent changes regarding the HOPE scholarship.
This will be a fun evening filled with activities, and UGA-themed door prizes will be given away throughout the event. There will be a UGA bulldog look-a-like in attendance available for pictures.
Dinner will be provided for all attendees. Therefore, those who are interested in attending must pre-register for the event. High school students who are interested in attending should register for the event by contacting their local county extension office. They may also contact the Southwest District Office by calling 386-3414 or e-mailing slwood@uga.edu. Transfer students can register by calling 386-3528 or by e-mailing mrutland@uga.edu. Parents are welcome.

May 21 Column – George F. Will
Leaving aside the seriousness of lawlessness, and the corruption of our civic culture by the professionally pious, this past week has been amusing. There was the spectacle of advocates of an ever-larger regulatory government expressing shock about such government's large capacity for misbehavior. And, entertainingly, the answer to the question "Will Barack Obama's scandals derail his second-term agenda?" was a question: What agenda?
