Former Blue Devil leads team to victory

ROME (AP) — Despite being outgained by over 200 yards, Charleston Southern notched its first victory of the season Saturday in a 23-20 win over Shorter.

The Division II Hawks (2-2), hosting a Division I opponent at Barron Stadium for the first time, outgained the Buccaneers (1-3) 447-245, and held possession for more than 34 minutes. Shorter put together drives of 89 and 87 yards in the fourth quarter, but settled for field goals both times.

Charleston Southern completed 2 of 9 passes for just 60 yards — although 46 of them came on a touchdown pass from former Tift County Blue Devil Malcolm Dixon to Chase Jones in the second quarter. Dixon also rushed for a go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, giving Charleston Southern the lead for good.

Shorter’s Eric Dodson was 5-of-7 passing for 130 yards and a score touchdown. He also gained 136 yards on 19 carries.
