TIFTON —
The 2012 season rolls on Friday night as seven of the Tiftarea’s eight teams have games. Every school, including Tiftarea Academy has a region opponent scheduled and several key matchups are slated at Tift County, Turner County and Cook goes to Fitzgerald in a meeting of top five teams.
Tift County (2-3) hosts Colquitt County (3-2) at Brodie Field at 8 p.m. Lacarvius Sears ran for three Coffee touchdowns and the Devils were unable to muster any points until the final two minutes of their region opening 24-7 loss at Douglas.
Colquitt County found the going tough at Mack Tharpe Memorial Stadium and dropped a 17-14 contest to Lowndes, with the Packers only able to muster 164 yards of offense.
The history between the two goes back to 1914 when Moultrie was Tifton High’s first regular high school opponent. Moultrie won the initial meeting 31-0 and lead the all-time series, 47-36-2. Last year: Colquitt County, 46-12.
Tiftarea Academy (0-5) has homecoming against Crisp Academy (3-1). The Panthers lost 57-0 last week against Westwood School while Crisp’s Wildcats were nosed by Terrell Academy, 21-14. Ryan Branch is trying for his first win as the Panthers’ head coach.
This is the first game since 2005 between the two schools, with Tiftarea holding a 9-3 overall advantage in the series. Last meeting: Tiftarea, 38-0.
Fitzgerald (4-1) celebrates homecoming, hosting Cook (4-0) at Jaycee Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Last week’s Associated Press poll ranked Cook third and Fitzgerald fifth.
The Purple Hurricanes closed out the first half of their game at Pelham with an interception return for a touchdown and blew the game open in the second half, en route to a 40-11 victory. Cook shut down Thomasville last Friday, 17-3 at Adel.
Fitzgerald has held the recent edge in the all-time series, winning five of the last six games between the two. Last year: Fitzgerald, 21-14.
Berrien (2-2) hosts Early County (3-2) at Raymond Jones Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The Rebels will be playing their first Region 1-AA game of the season Friday, as they rested last week. They last saw action against Turner County two weeks ago and the battle between two groups of Rebels saw Turner come out on top, 35-8.
The Early County Bobcats visited the Associated Press’s No. 2 team, Brooks County, and came out on the short end of a 42-8 score last Friday. This is the 13th all-time meeting between the two, the Bobcats holding a 11-1 lead. Last year: Early, 33-10.
Irwin County (2-2) hosts Telfair County (3-2) at Indian Field at 7: 30 p.m. The Indians had a chance to rest up last week. Two weeks ago, their massive second half comeback stunned a ranked Wilkinson County, 41-34, earning Jon Lindsey Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Week honors.
Telfair’s Trojans lost a squeaker in McRae last week against Clinch County, 17-9. Irwin County has won the last six games between the schools. Last year: Irwin, 21-3.
Turner County (4-1) hosts Charlton County (3-2) at Hobby Field at 7:30 p.m. The Rebels traveled to Lakeland last week and defeated Lanier County, 23-0.
A week after being shut out by Fitzgerald, the Charlton County Indians rebounded against the AP’s No. 5 team, Wilcox County, 32-26. Turner’s only win in the all-time series came in 1993. Last year: Charlton, 24-6.
Worth County (2-3) is idle. Their next game will be Oct. 12 at Cairo (3-2), who also rests up this week. Last Friday, the Rams were defeated by Americus-Sumter, 40-14.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
