Suspect's stick no match for victim's gun

VALDOSTA — A would-be robber received a surprise Tuesday evening when his pretend gun encountered the real thing, according to the Valdosta Police Department.

The robber wannabe said he was “just playing,” according to reports, when the Bubba Jax Seafood employee pointed a gun at the suspect during the robbery attempt at the 201 S. Lee St. business.

An employee was cleaning the business to close for the evening at approximately 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when the suspect allegedly walked into the business and demanded that the employee hand over money from the register, according to reports.

The suspect suggested that the bulging object beneath his shirt was a firearm, according to reports. After asking the suspect to repeat his demand for cash from the register, the employee pulled a real handgun and trained it on the suspect, police reported.

The employee told the suspect to raise his hands. The suspect complied. The suspect said the robbery demand was only a joke and revealed to the employee that the object beneath his shirt was merely a stick, reports stated.

The suspect fled the business on foot just after the employee phoned the incident to 911, according to reports.

Valdosta police officers detained a suspect a short while later, and transported him to the Lowndes County Jail.

Reginald Maxwell, 55, was arrested and is charged with armed

robbery, according to the Valdosta Police Department.

Anyone having any further information on this crime or any other crime is urged to contact the Valdosta Police Department, (229) 293-3145. Anonymous calls to the department may be placed at (229) 293-3901.
