Devils finally get chance to rest

TIFTON — After nine long games, the Tift County Blue Devils will get to sit at home this week while the rest of Region 1-AAAAAA is active tonight.

“It’s after a tough road,” said coach John Reid.

Reid’s introduction to the region has indeed been a tough one. After winning two of three games to start the season, Tift has had an unending schedule of top-rated teams. Every one of their last six opponents boasts a winning record. Three - Thomas County Central, Lowndes and Camden County - have locked up playoff spots and have a combined record of 25-2.

The Lowndes Vikings were last week’s game and they struck quickly, building up a 35-7 halftime lead en route to a 42-7 win.

“They’re just pretty good,” Reid said.

He was not thrilled with his defense, though.

“We gave them a punt return touchdown and another touchdown on third down.”

Though the opportunity to rest will be welcome for the Devils, the head coach says the team does not have many injuries to heal.

“We’ve had kids bumped and bruised,” he said.

They will have a chance next week to go out of the 2012 season on a winning note next Friday when they visit the Brunswick Pirates.

It will be Tift County’s first game against the Pirates and only the second time in history they have traveled to Brunswick. The other trip was in 1940 when they played Glynn Academy.

Brunswick, who has been eliminated from the state tournament, has a chance to hurt Valdosta’s chances tonight. They host the Wildcats, who are currently in a three-way logjam for the third and fourth slots. Only Lowndes and Camden County have clinched postseason bids.

The Blue Devils will rely on the services of their leading rusher, Rashad Daniels, and on Austin McCant, whose big return last week set up his team’s lone touchdown, which was scored by Daniels.

“He’s been kind of an unknown player,” said Reid of McCant.

“He’s been a leader and has had a good attitude.”

The future looks bright for the Devils and Reid is especially proud of the middle school programs. Two weeks after the Eighth Street Middle School seventh grade team won its championship with an undefeated record, he was happy to report that the eighth grade squad had won the South Georgia championship last week.
