TIFTON —
Over the past few weeks, members of the Tifton Police Department have made five arrests in regards to various entering autos (second degree burglary) and vehicle thefts dating back to early August of this year, says Lt. Lee Dunston at the TPD.
“The really frustrating part for law enforcement is that the crimes are continuing,” he stated. “It seems that every time an arrest is made, someone else picks up where the others left off.”
According to Dunston, on Sept. 15, a police officer checked out a suspicious person in an area north of 20th Street. The individual had various items that were determined to have come from a vehicle burglary. In that case, 32-year-old Michael David Carruth II was arrested and charged with second degree burglary and financial transaction card theft.
Dunston said on Sept. 22, 19-year-old Robin Riehle and 18-year-old Paul Boyd were arrested and charged with the theft of a 2001 Ford truck from a house near the hospital. The truck had been wrecked and left in a wooded area near the high school.
“After subsequent investigation, they were charged with numerous vehicle burglaries and two other vehicle thefts in the same area dating back to early August,” he stated. “One of the vehicles that they took wound up catching on fire in a wooded area off of Ferry Lake Road.”
On Sept. 28, as previously reported, 18-year-old Contravis West and 20-year-old Brandon Sutton were arrested for a vehicle burglary in the 2000 block of O’Neal Avenue, Dunston added.
He stated that over the last two days, there have been more reports of this continuing with some occurring in the same areas that were targeted by the people or pairs of people already arrested. He noted that in cases where suspects have talked to investigators, they have admitted to checking for unlocked cars.
“It is believed that they may get lucky on cars with key pad entry systems as well, but that is uncommon. The vast majority have been unlocked,” Dunston said. “The vehicles that were stolen had a key in the vehicle at the time of the theft.”
He gave the following tips on how to greatly reduce the chances of being a victim of this type of crime:
