Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at the Clark Funeral Home. Mr. Payne passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at Capital Regional Medical Center-Gadsden Memorial Campus in Quincy, Fla.

Mr. Payne was born in Atlanta, Sept.  3, 1951, to the late Eugene Durrell Payne and Annie Louise Smith Payne. He was a graduate of Tift County High School, Class of 1971. He was also a graduate of St. John’s School of Real Estate.  He was presently employed with Berry Nurseries Florida Division as a Plant Health Manager. Terry loved history and was “like a walking textbook” on the Civil War. He loved to hunt with muzzle loaders and visit the shooting range with his son. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Cairo, where he discovered the world of Pinewood Derby races, in which he became an expert.  Mr. Payne designed and built winning cars for his son’s races in Eastside Awanas and Boy Scouts, as well as for children of other families. He also had a profound interest in making wine. His homemade wine quickly gained popularity with friends and family, to such an extent that people continuously asked when the next batch would be ready.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Carter Payne of Cairo; son, Thomas J. Payne of Valdosta; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Dr. Gordon Borkat of Columbus; father-in-law and mother-in-law, J. N. and Betty Carter of Cairo; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Donna and Todd Gainous of Cairo, Barbara and Dennis Walker of Cairo, Janis and Tony McDonald of Ellenton, Fla.; nephews, Dr. Michael Borkat, Daniel Borkat, both of Columbus, Jarrod Borkat of Connecticut, Adam Borkat of Atlanta, Daniel Walker of Destin, Fla., Jared Walker of Bainbridge and Michael Iwanowski of Palmetto, Fla.; nieces, Jessica Iwanowski of Gainesville, Fla., Samantha Gainous of Cairo; and a host of great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Felton and Annie Bess Payne, Ira and Nina Pearl Smith; his parents, Eugene and Louise Payne; and a brother, Wayne Payne.
