TIFTON —
If you were to drive by Tiftarea Academy in Chula this week, you would see a Panther football team hard at work during practice.
You might also wonder who is on the Panthers’ schedule for Friday night.
Watching the work going on, you would be surprised to see that schedule saying the Panthers are off this Friday. The Panthers will not play another game until Sept. 14 when they host Southwest Georgia Academy.
Coach Ryan Branch is proud of the work his team is putting in this week.
“We gave them Monday off, so they could spend some time with their families. But we are going to practice every other day this week. The Friday practice will be short though, because we will be going out to scout,” said Branch.
The Panthers are 0-2 on the year, but have held their own in their losses, 28-14 to Terrell Academy, and 39-26 to Sherwood Christian.
Both games saw the Panthers fall behind early, only to fight back, before falling at the end.
“We are still having some growing pains,” said Branch. “I appreciate the work the kids have put in to get better. They are letting us work them hard.”
The Sherwood game was an exciting one for him, the team and a big crowd, Branch said.
“We had a lot of folks in Tift County come see us play, and I wanted them to know we really appreciated their support,” said Branch. “It meant a lot to us, and we would love to have them out for every game.”

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
