Colquitt County band director out on bond

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County Schools officials will meet Monday to determine leadership for the 50th Regiment marching band, with options including the return of a retired band director or shifting existing personnel around.

Band Director Paul Joseph Guilbeau, jailed Thursday on a charge of sexual assault on a person in custody — a teenage band student — was released Friday afternoon on a $10,000 bond.

Guilbeau is accused of having sex with the student on Aug. 10 at a location off-campus, police said.

On Friday, Moultrie Police Department Inv. Steven Colgan said that the investigation is focusing on whether there are additional victims.

“That’s definitely something I’m looking into,” he said. “Right now I don’t have anything to suggest there are. That’s where we are right now.”

Colgan said he cannot discuss the circumstances of how police learned of the alleged sexual encounter between Guilbeau and the student.

Earlier, he and a school official said that the girl’s parents showed up Thursday morning at police headquarters to report the alleged romance. Colgan also would not comment on whether any phone or text messages between the two had been discovered.

Guilbeau, 42, who was entering his second year with the band, also was suspended with pay on Thursday pending further investigation by the Colquitt County School System.

The arrest left the band without a leader a week before it was scheduled to travel to Atlanta for the first Colquitt County High School football game.

“We’re going to get together early next week and look at some personnel moves, and hopefully have something in place by early next week,” Schools Superintendent Samuel DePaul said during a Friday telephone interview. “We’ve talked about some retired directors that live in the area; that’s probably going to be one option.”

Another consideration is moving a band director from the middle or junior high to the high school, he said.

“We want to have plans in place for next week going to the (Georgia) Dome,” DePaul said.
