TIFTON —
Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough confirmed in a press release to The Tifton Gazette Thursday that Altonio “Tony” Demar Banks, 38, of Tifton, drowned Wednesday morning in a pond near Brookfield.
Scarbrough stated that he and members of his office responded Wednesday to a location off U.S. Highway 82 East to reports of an accident involving a boat containing two fisherman overturning.
Tift County EMS, Tifton Tift County Fire Department, Georgia DNR and the Tift County Dive Team also responded to the call, according to the press release, and one of the fishermen was able to swim to safety and the other was unable to make it. Banks’ body was recovered by members of the Tift County Dive Team.
Banks was pronounced dead at the scene by Tift County Coroner Josh Hendrix. Hendrix said he contacted the GBI Crime Lab and explained the details of the incident and information given by the surviving witness at the scene and that crime lab personnel decided an autopsy was not necessary.
Hendrix listed the manner of death as accidental and the cause of death as drowning.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
