TIFTON —
A Tifton man was shot and killed Thursday night in the area of Wilton Avenue and another man has been arrested and charged with the crime.
Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough stated in a press release that deputies responded to Wilton Avenue at approximately 9:20 p.m. Thursday in response to a 911 call from someone stating that there had been a shooting. Officers arrived to find 35-year-old Cambre Vashown Murphy of Tifton lying in the roadway unresponsive and without a pulse with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.
Officers then observed a visibly upset black male nearby and identified him as 37-year-old Cedric Lervell Sears of Tifton. Sears was taken into custody and charged with murder.
According to Scarbrough, information was given that there had been some type of altercation between the victim and Sears.
Tift County Emergency Medical Services responded, as did Tift County Coroner Josh Hendrix, who pronounced Murphy dead at the scene.
Sears is currently being held in the Tift County Jail without bond.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the ongoing investigation, said Scarbrough.
