ABAC Fillies start softball season with 2-2 mark

TIFTON — The Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Fillies softball team began their 2013 season this past weekend with a tournament in Florida. They finished 2-2.

ABAC won the first game, 3-1, against Palm Beach State College.

An ace performance by Rachel Hill led the Fillies to the victory.

Hill got the pitching win for ABAC, thanks to 10 strikeouts. Hill allowed no earned runs on three hits and no walks over seven innings.

The Fillies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The ABAC attack began with a single from Karli Smith. A single by Hill then moved Smith from first to second. Kimberly Jewell singled, scoring Smith.

The lead stayed with ABAC after the fourth, when it scored one run on an RBI double by Hill.

Game two for ABAC saw the Fillies fall 4-3 to Indian River.

Lauren Thrasher led ABAC’s offensive threat, as she got on base three times in the game. She scored two runs and had one RBI. She homered in the third inning and singled in the sixth inning.

ABAC’s big inning was the sixth. An RBI double by Alexis Ricks and a sacrifice fly by Savanna Berkhisher set off the Fillies rally.

The Fillies rebounded with a 4-1 win over Pasco-Hernando Community College behind Bobbie Jo Royals, who had two extra base hits.

She doubled in the first and third innings and singled in the fifth inning.

Hill shut down Pasco-Hernando while she was in the circle. Pasco-Hernando managed just two hits off of Hill, who allowed one earned run, walked six and struck out six during her seven innings of work.

ABAC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A double by Royals, bringing home Maiah Talmage started the inning off.

The Fillies never trailed after scoring one run in the third on an RBI single by Smith.

Finally, the Fillies fell 9-0 to Seminole State.

ABAC’s Jewell did her best to jumpstart the offense for ABAC Fillies, reaching base two times. She singled in the second inning.

The Fillies will be back in action Friday in Albany at the Darton College tournament.
