The Tiftarea Academy Panthers will celebrate Senior Night tonight with a chance to win the girls Region 1-AAA title. Tuesday, the varsity squads split battles with the Southland Academy Golden Raiders.
The varsity girls took a 51-38 victory to improve to 13-13 overall and 6-1 in the region. Jarrett McWhorter had a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Caitlyn Albritton contributed eight and Ali Rippy had seven points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Thomason had six steals and four assists and Neeli Fortson also had six steals.
The Panthers dropped their game to Southland, 58-36. Ethan Mims was the only Tiftarea player in double digits with 11. Sam Tucker and Trent Hobbs each had six and Rob Flick scored five.
In junior varsity action, the girls remain undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record after winning, 36-20. Macy Strenth scored nine and Maci Paulk netted eight.
The JV boys are now 4-6 after a crushing 43-17 victory. Logan Carswell nearly outscored the opposition single-handedly, depositing 16. Neel Patel had seven points.
Tonight, at 6:30 p.m., the varsity squares off with the Deerfield-Windsor Knights at home. If the Lady Panthers win, they win the region crown outright. If they lose, the Lady Knights, who have a 5-2 region record, get the crown as they won the most recent contest.

The Minnesota Vikings qualified for the NFL playoffs Sunday with a 37-34 win over the Green Bay Packers. The Vikings will have a rematch with the Packers at 8 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the postseason Saturday in Green Bay. The game will be broadcast on WALB and NBC. It will be the first NFL playoff game for Tifton native Larry Dean (51), who leads the special teams for the Vikings.
