TIFTON —
County commissioners are working to value engineer the new public works facility in order to save the county money.
Jones Construction, located in Tift County, would be paid a little more than $7,000 to take a look at the project and inform the county where there are legitimate savings.
“We want to do our best to get teh work done by local people,” said Jason Jordan, director of the Public Works and Roads departments.
After the initial value engineering is complete, the contractor will then provide a bid to the county, which will be firm, so there will be no surprises -- or cost increases along the way.
Jordan said the cost of the facility, which will be a metal building with an office in the front, is estimated at $55 per square foot.
But even with what he calls a “dirt cheap” cost, Jordan said the county is still pushing to drive the cost down.
Site work on the project will be done by the Roads Department, which will mean a $400,000 to $500,000 savings, Jordan added.
Commissioners congratulated the Roads Department in Tuesday night’s workshop on their work during the recent rain storms. Tift County has received more than 12 inches of rain since January 1, and Jordan said the potholes being reported throughout the county are due to excessive rain and old roads.
He added that there are two road crews working around the clock to fix the roads.
Each of the commissioners commended the Roads Department, calling their work outstanding.
Commissioner Donnie Hester, however, reminded his colleagues to ask their constituents to be patient, as there are many issues to be dealt with, not just roads.

Identity Theft: Do all you can to protect your credit, debit cards
Pictured are a couple of skimmers, used here on an ATM machine and gas pump. The devices usually fit right over the original card reader or key pad, but are loose when tugged.
It's summertime and there may be only two words on your mind – road trip. As we hit the roads this summer for vacations we all make stops at the gas station and the ATM.

Unfortunately, so do identity thieves. They set up machines called skimmers on gas pumps and ATMs that are designed to fool you and benefit them. The devices read your debit or credit card and record the number, which the thief can collect by retrieving the skimmer or even remotely using a smartphone and a wireless Internet connection. The information will then be used to create a duplicate card bearing the number, but a different name. - Tift Sheriff’s Office investigating scam

Fields played, coached three eras of basketball
Imagine a player averaging 29 points per game for a career and receiving no college scholarship offers. That happened to Dona Fields.
Fields, as Dona Gaskins, is easily Berrien High's all-time leading scorer. She scored her 1,000th point as a sophomore and during her last three seasons was the Rebelettes' leading scorer in every game. She received no college attention, no offers. - Kilgore resigns baseball post at ABAC
