TIFTON — You never know what you’re going to hear when Derrick Dove takes the stage.

The Tifton native and ABAC student will be the featured performer today at the Concert in the Garden at Tifton Gardens downtown. The event is sponsored by The Tifton Gazette, Main Street Tifton and the Tift Theatre.

Dove lists an eclectic group among his influences — Little Milton, James Taylor, the Commodores and his dad, Don Dove, who has been a fixture on the local music scene for years. Derrick Dove grew up around music, beginning his playing career at age 12 when he played drums in his dad’s band. He switched to guitars and vocals at age 14 and has not stopped since.

Between being a full-time student and working part-time as an assistant manager as his mother’s business, Friendly Pawn and Music, and teaching guitar lessons, Dove plays in two bands. His own band, Smokehouse, consists of guitarist Kent Dowling, bassist George Creech, keyboardist Eric Gonzales and drummer Jamie Richardson. He also performs with the Michael Stacey band, which will leave Sunday for a two-week gig in Wyoming.

“I like to play all kinds of music, just whatever I like,” he said. “When I play, I can go from one kind to another and it just flows. I don’t try to separate one type of music from another.”

Dove’s set will include some blues, rock and soul among others. He has been playing at events such as the Love Affair for several years and also performs with the ABAC Jazz Choir.

The Concert in the Garden is free of charge and parking is available across Main Street in the Cato-Knight Parking Lot. The music begins at noon.
