Five opponents in one week no problem for tennis teams

TIFTON — It’s been quite a week for Tift County tennis teams, who continue to excel in and out of region competition.
From Feb. 21-28, they faced five schools, winning all but one. The Lady Devils were edged by the Lowndes Vikettes, 3-2, but everything else went their way, usually in a rout.

Region 1-6A and Tift County tennis are becoming fast friends. The Blue Devils and Lady Devils won against two more opponents this week, defeating Thomas County Central Feb. 21 and Northside of Warner Robins Feb. 22.
The Blue Devils won all 10 matches, with the Lady Devils earning victories in nine.
It was a rout for the Lady Devils against Northside. Not only did everyone win in straight sets, Tift lost only three games total.
Caydence Gabel won 6-0, 6-0 against Lily Lin, as did Anna Claire Owens against Megan D’Angelo. Brayden Callison won 6-1, 6-0 against Madison Knight.
Fatima Williams and Riley Williams also won 6-0, 6-0 over Jayla Russell and Zariyah Griffin. Kylei Cutts and Anna Lupo earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Shania Bautista and Gigi Clowers.
All five Blue Devils matches ended in straight sets.

Ross Peters defeated Corry Nichols, 6-1, 6-0. Elijah Hellman’s victory over Sahat Patel was 6-1, 6-1 and Maitrey Patel earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dev Patel.
In doubles, Christian Mathis and Adam Beck won 6-1, 6-1 against Calvin Clark and Sanjay Patel and Matthew Layfield and Tyson Lasseter had 6-4, 6-0 sets against Logan Windham and Andrew McKenna.
The Blue Devils only lost one set against Thomas County Central.
Mathis and Beck dispatch C.J. Covington and Brayton White, 6-2, 6-4. Lasseter and Layfield were 6-0, 6-3 against Caleb Kinneer and Joshua Williamson.
Hellman defeated Cagle Willis 6-0, 6-4. Patel had 6-1, 6-1 sets against Keaton Stephens. Peters dropped a 7-5 middle set to Braxton O’Leary, but won the first 6-2 and the final 10-6.
Gabel had two more 6-0, 6-0 sets in her match, winning over Emma Rae Smith.
Callison was 6-4, 6-2 victor over Samantha Jennings and Owens fell in her first set against Kenley Loper 6-4, but came back for 7-5, 10-5 set wins.
Williams Griffin went 6-2, 6-2 against Jacey Keyton and Angelina Vasquez.
Makaina Griffin and Heali Patel had Thomas County Central’s only win, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 against Cutts and Lupo.
Thursday Feb. 23. They won five more matches against Lowndes for their third sweep in as many days. The Lady Devils, however, were edged by the Vikettes.
None of the Devils lost a set against Lowndes.
Patel had a 6-0, 6-3 win against Drew Faircloth. At No. 2 singles, Hellman defeated Steven Ruepp, 6-2, 6-1 and Peters defeated Eli Johnson 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Layfield and Lasseter won over John Ramy and Wyatt Galbraith 6-2, 6-2. Beck and Mathis swept Ibo Ramy and Etha Cotton, 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Devils won a singles and a doubles match.
Lupo and Cutts won straight sets over Victoria Scarborough and Hana Shriner, 6-2, 6-1. Callison won at No. 3 singles against Morgan Causey, 6-1, 6-1.
Tift almost pulled out the victory. Williams and Griffin went to a third set against Annabelle Kerrigan and Anna Bearden. After dropping the first set 6-1, they came back to win the second 6-1. Lowndes won the tiebreaking set 10-0.
The other singles matches saw Rachel Balk win over Gabel 6-0, 6-0 and Milly Prince defeat Anna Claire Owens 6-2, 6-0.
Matches were played at McKey Park.
Perhaps it is only natural that Tift County kept the fire going Monday, Feb. 27 against Cook. The tennis teams won two more in Adel, the Lady Devils by a 4-1 finish and the Blue Devils by a much closer, 3-2.
All three singles for the Lady Devils won their matches, and in straight sets. Callison won over S. Patel, 6-1, 6-0.Owens defeated S. Bettis, 6-1, 6-2 and Gabel won over L. Dixon, 6-2, 6-3.
Lupo and Cutts defeated J. Barber and L. Croft at No. 1 doubles 6-6 (7-2), 4-7, 10-6. The other doubles came down to a tiebreaker as well, J. Harper and L. Fulp winning over Griffin and Williams, 6-8, 6-3, 11-9.
The Devils earned the win in No. 2 and 3 singles, as well as No. 2 doubles.
Malachi Evans, making his season debut after moving from the basketball courts to the tennis courts, teamed with Mathis to defeated J. Patel and L. Franklin 6-6 (7-1), 6-2. Elijah Hellman won in singles over E. Crosby, 6-0, 6-4 and Ross Peters defeated C. McDaniel 6-0, 6-3.
Cook defeated Patel at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5 and V. Patel and D. Martin earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Layfield and Lasseter.
On Feb. 28, Tift finished out the month with a double win against Veterans. The Devils won, 5-0, with the Lady Devils squeezing by, 3-2.
Williams and Griffin won a tiebreaker against the Lady Warhawks, 10-7. They had won the first set 6-1 before falling 6-4. This was the deciding match after the first four were split.
Callison won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and in doubles, Cutts and Lupo defeated their opponents, 6-2, 6-1.
Owens fell 6-1, 6-4 in her singles match, as did Gabel, 6-2, 6-3.
Lasseter and Layfield were the first off the court, having won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-1. Hellman and Patel quickly followed to clinch a quick win. Patel won, 6-2, 6-1, with Hellman winning by a similar 6-1, 6-1.
No. 2 doubles, Evans and Mathis, earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory before Peters finished up, 6-2, 6-3.
