TIFTON — The inaugural Heroes Tournament between the city’s fire department, police department and the local Army recruiter office went off without a hitch Monday evening.
The event, sponsored by the Army, brought out approximately 200 people to Eve Park to cheer on their local heroes and eat burgers grilled by the Tifton Masonic Lodge #47.
The Army also set out a variety of games and activities for kids, like a basketball and football throw, corn hole and tug-of-war.
The first game between the Tifton Fire Department and the Tifton Police Department ended with the fire department handily defeating the police department 14 to 1.
Interim fire chief Bobby Bennett accepted the trophy on behalf of the team, which will live at the fire department until next year, when it will be up for grabs.
“It was definitely a win win for the city,” Bennett said.
“We got to laugh and cut up, but at the end we shook hands and it was a good time for everyone and a good thing for the city.”
After the first game, the fire department faced off against the Army team.
The Army beat the fire department 21 to 10.
Staff Sergeant John Anderson with the Army recruiting office said that they are already looking forward to doing it again next year with a larger budget.
“It was an excellent turnout, and we hope that there is more public participation next year,” said Anderson.
