Jack Austin Scott

ASHBURN — Jack Austin Scott, 80, of Ashburn, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Tift Regional medical Center following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashburn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., or favorite charity.

A native and lifelong resident of Ashburn, Mr. Scott was the son of Dr. W. R. Scott and Susie Tyler Scott, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Raines Scott, who died Oct. 8, 1994, and an infant son.

Mr. Scott was the retired manager of Kaiser Chemicals and the founder of Scott Oil Company. He was a member of the Ashburn First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for many years. Mr. Scott served as mayor of Ashburn form 1959-60.

His hobbies included cattle farming, hunting, fishing and traveling.

He served in the U. S. Army during World War II as a First Lt. with the 301st Bomber Group, where he was a B-17 pilot. Mr. Scott was in air combat in Sicily Naples, Goggia, Balkans and Europe. His bomber was shot down over the Mediterranean and he spent 18 months in a German POW camp. He received the Prisoner of War Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, European-African-Middle Easter Theater Service Medal, Distinguished Service Cross, Air Medical with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and two Purple Hearts. Mr. Scott was honorably discharged as a captain from the USAF Reserve June 4, 1957.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Scott of Ashburn; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James W. and Tyra Scott of Tifton; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Anne and Lloyd Ewing of Ashburn; one stepson, Danny Hanner of Lawrenceville; three step daughters, Donna Hoffeber of Woodstock, Barbara Foster of Lilburn and Nancy Boulware of Pine Mountain; six grandchildren, Jennifer Ewing of Atlanta, Scott Ewing of St. Marys, Mary Margaret Ewing of Ashburn, Rep. Austin Scott, Michele Upshaw and Curt Scott, all of Tifton; one grandchild, Wells Austin Scott of Tifton; several step-grandchildren; and two nieces, Susan Watson of Ashburn and Linda Brooke of Sycamore.

Billy Mulkey

IRWIN COUNTY — Billy Mulkey, 64, of Lands Crossing Community of Irwin County, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Big Creek Cemetery in Irwin County. The Rev. Ed Reeves will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Big Creek Baptist Church Youth Fund, c/o Jack Eldridge, P. O. Box 39, Mystic, GA 31769 or to donors favorite charity or church.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. tonight at Paulk Funeral Home in Fitzgerald.

Born Oct. 17, 1937, in Ben Hill County, Mr. Mulkey was the son of Louise Phillips Mulkey and Reason Mulkey, both deceased.

A lifetime resident of the community, he was a logger and a truck driver. Mr. Mulkey was a former employee of Modern Fibers and James Clements Logging Company. He was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church in irwin County. Mr. Mulkey was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Stokes Mulkey of Land’s Crossing Community; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Kenny Luke of Brookfield and Patti Jo and Darren M. Smith of Irwinville; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Billy Mulkey Jr., Michael Mulkey and Marcus and Jennifer Mulkey, all of Lands Crossing Community; two grandchildren, Marshall McDonald and Allan Luke; and one sister, Patsy M. Ellis of Hammond, La.

John E. Powell Sr.

TIFTON — John Edward “Gator” Powell Sr., 68, of Tifton, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Tift Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Beulah Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. L. C. Solomon will officiate. Burial will follow at Tift Memorial Gardens.

Born June 11, 1933, in Taft, Fla., Mr. Powell was the son of Lewis Powell and Thelma Adderly Powell, both deceased.

He was an Army veteran, a retired te





acher after 37 years of service and a member of Beulah Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Christine W. Powell of Tifton; four sons, Christopher Powell, John Eugene Powell and Alonzo Wilson, all of Tifton and Edward A. Powell of Goldsboro, N.C.; two daughters, Lileta N. Graydon of Hopkinsville, Ky., and Cassandra S. Powell of Hempstead, N.Y.; one sister, Idella Johnson of Fort Myers, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ruby R. Davis

MOULTRIE — Ruby Roberson Davis, 89, of Moultrie, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Oakridge Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Winfred Roberson, Murray Roberson, Mickey Roberson, Randy Ogletree, Irvin McDaniel, Elwood McDaniel, Sidney Roberson and Terrell Roberson.

Flowers will be accepted or gifts may be made to your favorite charity or church.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight at Bowen-Donaldson.

Born Aug. 15, 1912, in Paulding County, Mrs. Davis was the daughter of Benjamin Ervin Roberson and Nancy Rosa Lee Baxter Roberson, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hamilton Scaife Davis; five brothers, Bennie Roberson, J. T. Roberson, Hershel Roberson, Dewey Roberson and Cecil Roberson; two sisters, Josephine Lawhon and Vennie McDaniel; and one stepson, Hamp Davis Jr. She was the last survivor of seven children.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Moultrie, where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Cherokee Garden Club.

Mrs. Davis is survived by one stepdaughter, Mary Louise Davis Gavigan of Moultrie; three step-grandchildren, Steven Gavigan of Savannah, Robert Gavigan of St. George Island, Fla., and Hamp Davis III of Moultrie; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Mary B. Durham, 79, of Tifton, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Southern Avenue Church of God, burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-10 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Survivors include one brother, Melvin Johnson of Tifton; and one sister, LeAnna Bush of Tifton. Ruth Clements, 87, of Sparks, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Sparks Baptist Church, burial at Sparks City Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Wendell Clements of Hahira and Larry Clements of Fort Worth, Texas; and one sister, Alma Hamner of Cecil. Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
