J.H. Jordan



TIFTON – Joseph Henry (J.H.) Jordan, 78, of Tifton, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The Rev. Eddie Allen will officiate. Burial will follow at Zion Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bo Jordan, Gator Walker, Kevin Moore, George Cirilo, Brad Hurst and Joe Fletcher.

Born July 8, 1923, in Tift County, Jordan was the son of William Henry Jordan and Minnie Lee Clark Jordan, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eva Belle Garris Jordan, who died Feb. 4, 1999, and two brothers, Huey Jordan and Hubert Jordan.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Tifton First Assembly of God and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Jordan is survived by his children, Patricia and Al Quick of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Sharon and Greg Walker, Bobby and Roseann Jordan and Benny and Darlene Jordan, all of Tifton; two brothers, Billy Jordan of Tifton and Leroy Jordan of Irwinville; four sisters, Dorothy Jensen and Juanita Blalock, both of Tifton; Christine Varner of Jacksonville, Fla., and Minnie Kate Modock of Elyria, Ohio; his grandchildren, Kristie and Brad Hurst, Bo Jordan, Gator and Amanda Walker, Debi Walker, Jennifer and George Cirilo, all of Tifton, and Carmen Moore and Kevin and Trish Moore, all of Fort Walton Beach; and four great-granddaughters, Brianna and Allison Hurst and Taylor Madison Walker, all of Tifton, and Tabitha Moore of Fort Walton Beach.

Pauline Cook Martin



TIFTON — Pauline Cook Martin, 90, of Tifton, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The Rev. Willie Beasley will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Tifton’s First United Methodist Church.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be the 20th Century Library Club and former members of the Charlotte Carson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Born Sept. 4, 1910, on the family farm near Chula, Martin attended Tifton public schools, graduating from Tifton High School in 1927, and went on to earn a degree in 1931 from Bessie Tift College in Forsyth.

A school teacher for 33 years in Georgia and Florida, she retired from the city schools of Decatur in 1972, but maintained her love of children and teaching for the remainder of her life.

Martin was a member of the First United Methodist Church before moving to Atlanta in 1952, and after retiring to Tifton in 1975, where she was active in Club 55. She enjoyed participating in the production of the club newsletter, “The Chatterbox.” Martin was a former member of Circle #8.

She was a lifetime member of the Tift County Retired Teachers Association, the 20th Century Club and a former member of the Charlotte Carson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

William Austin Martin Sr., to whom she was married May 25, 1935, passed away July 31. Mrs. Martin was the daughter of the late James Dawson Cook (1876-1931) and the late Temple Ritchey Cook (1877-1941). Brothers and sisters who preceded her in death are Mary Louise Monk Duncan (1898-1973), Nannie Kate Cook (1900-11), Vera Bowen (1902-78), James Dawson Cook Jr. (1904-65), Hazel Hollingsworth (1906-84) and Aubrey Bridges Cook (1908-78).

She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Martin Longino of Fayetteville; one son, William Austin Martin Jr. of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Ruth Hitchcock of Tifton; five grandchildren, Robert Gregory Longino of Lawrence, Kan., Leigh Longino Clark of Wichita, Kan., Lynn longino of Fayetteville, William Austin Martin III of Pusan, South Korea, and Jonathan Sanford Martin of Richmond, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher and Courtney Longino of Lawrence, Kan., and Kristina Clark of Witchita, Kan.

ADEL — George Kemp Greene, 82, of Adel, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Adel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Adel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Craig Hutto and the Rev. Tom Oliver will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodlawn City Cemetery.

Born May 26, 1919, in Tift County, Greene was a retired letter carrier, a first little league umpire and a local Boy Scout master. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a Mason and Shriner for 50 years and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Greene is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bill Wright Greene; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Angela Greene of Adel; the mother of his grandchildren, Carol Greene of Adel; a grandson, Kemp Greene of Valdosta; and a granddaughter, Jessie Greene of Savannah.

Floyd Purvis

ALAPAHA — Floyd Purvis, 85, of Alapaha, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla. The Rev. Gerald Purvis and Elder Jerry Barrs will officiate. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery in Irwin County.

Born March 2, 1916, in Berrien County, Purvis was the son of Nellie Brogdon Purvis and Oscar Purvis, both deceased.

Purvis lived in Berrien County his entire life and was a farmer. He was a former Berrien County Committee chairman for the ASCS Board. He was a Mason for more than 50 years with the Duncan Lodge No. 234 in Nashville.

Purvis was preceded in death by his wife, Versie Moore Purvis and five brothers and two sisters. He is survived by one daughter, Nellie Jo Spicer of Alapaha; one brother, Talmadge Purvis of Alapaha; one granddaughter, Vickie S. King of Alapaha; one grandson, Troy Spicer Jr., of Atlanta; and two great-grandsons, Turner and Madison King of Alapaha.

Hazel W. Kirkland

OCILLA — Hazel Wilkerson Kirkland, 75, of Ocilla, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The Rev. James Irions will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Born Nov. 5, 1925 in Mississippi, Mrs. Kirkland was the daughter of Terry and Ava Busby Wilkerson, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Lindsey McMillan; her second husband, Frank Ellenburg; and one son and one daughter.

Mrs. Kirkland was a homemaker and a member of New Hope House of Prayer.

Mrs. Kirkland is survived by her spouse, Jack Kirkland; four sons, the Rev. Jimmy McMillan, Glen McMillan and Danny McMillan of Ocilla and Richard McMillan of Tifton; three stepsons, Jack Kirkland Jr., Robert Kirkland and Gabriell Kirkland of Tifton; two daughters, Sue Dove of Ocilla and Helen Porter of Valdosta; three brothers, Quitman Wilkerson of Forest, Miss., R.T. Wilkerson of Lake, Miss., and Joe Wilkerson of Lake, Miss.; three sisters, Exie Jordan, Mollie Edwards and Adain Stephenson, all of Union, Miss.; 25 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
