Ruth Pope Stone
TIFTON — Ruth Pope Stone, 82, of Tifton, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Assembly of God. The Rev. Eddie Hutcheson will officiate. Burial will follow at Lawrence Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons: Danny Tyson, Alan Parrish, Jamie Parrish, Monty Rutland, Brian Joy, William Futch, Mason Hardy, Carl Tyson and Chris Tyson.
The Senior Adult Sunday School Class of First Assembly of God and the staff of the Georgia Agrirama will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors, Tiftarea Chapel.
Born Oct. 2, 1919, in Tifton, Mrs. Stone was the daughter of Henry L. Pope and Betsy Walker Pope, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Stone, three brothers and one sister.
A lifetime resident of Tifton, Mrs. Stone was a concession clerk at the Georgia Agrirama and a member of First Assembly of God in Tifton, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Stone is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Billie and Carlton Tyson, Hilda and Kent Carter, Debbie and Steve Edenfield and Rhonda and A.B. Garrard, all of Tifton; two brothers, Lloyd Pope of Tifton and Robert Pope of Macon; one sister, Kate Thompson of Macon; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors, Tiftarea Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
J. L. Blackstock
SUMNER — J. L. Blackstock, 85, of Sumner, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at his residence from declining health.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Banks Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Kenneth Smith and the Rev. Charles Blackstock will officiate. Burial will follow at Sumner Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sumner United Methodist Church, c/o Linda Souter, P.O. Box 802, Sumner, Ga. 31789, or Hospice of Tift Area Inc., P.O. Box 747, Tifton, Ga., 31793.

Born Jan. 21, 1917, in Forsyth County, Mr. Blackstock graduated from Sumner High School in 1938 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
A resident of Sumner most of his life, he retired from Worth Milling Company after 59 years and was a member of Sumner United Methodist Church, where he was the treasurer.
Mr. Blackstock was a member of William F. Sikes Post 4825 of the VFW, the American Legion and the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Martha Dean Sessions Blackstock of Sumner; one son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Jeanie Blackstock of Oak Hill, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Mark Jones of Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother, Jack Blackstock of Dawsonville; one sister, Margaret Bramlett of Clayton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Burton Brown Childs
STATESBORO — Burton Brown Childs, 75, of Statesboro, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, after a long illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. Ron Andrew will officiate. Burial will follow at Eastside Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459, or to First United Methodist Church Children’s Fund, P.O. Box 2048, Statesboro, GA 30458.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
A native of Tift County, Mr. Childs graduated from the Sycamore High School.
Prior to moving to Bulloch County in 1955, he was an auctioneer in Turner, Lee and Tift Counties. Mr. Childs was a retired real estate developer in Bulloch County and a member of Statesboro First Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher for the Junior Department Sunday School. He was a former member and past president of the Statesboro Kiwanis Club., former member of the Portal Huntin
g Club and a former council member of the Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Childs was instrumental in the land acquisition for the present Ogeechee fairgrounds. He will be remembered as the auctioneer for local school fundraisers.
Mr. Childs is survived by his wife, Pamela Parrish Childs of Statesboro; his former wife, Bettye Childs of Statesboro; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Rex Childs, Tommy and Joan Childs and Randy and Deadra Childs, all of Statesboro and Mark and Judy Childs of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Brownie and Jim Miller of Waycross; three sisters, Elizabeth Montgomery of Tifton, Dorothy McCard of Sycamore and Willie “Bill” Fowler of Statesboro; his stepchildren, Angela Potter of Dublin, Hope and Walt Aldred and Todd Parrish, all of Statesboro; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
