Martha Sue
Williams Pittman
TIFTON — Martha Sue Pittman, wife of Dr. Carl S. Pittman Jr., died Feb. 5, 2005.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Tifton. The Rev. Jerry Lillard, the Rev. Jay Roberson and Dr. Sam Rogers will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.
Dr. Greg Anderson, Dr. Joel Johnson, James Herring, Tom Riddle, Joe Gray and Rob Reinhardt will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Loyalty Sunday School Class, President Betty Claxton, and members of the Circle #5 of UMW, Mrs. Lois Purser, chairman, will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Pittman was the daughter of the late J.C. and Dolly Hendricks Williams of Tifton and the sister of the late Mrs. Hazel W. Rosser. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter. Mrs. Pittman was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Millen (Ga.), and the family moved to Tifton in 1931.
Mrs. Pittman was graduated from Tift County High School with honors, from Andrew College and she received her AB degree from GSCW in Milledgeville, which is now Georgia College.
In 1982, Mrs. Pittman was honored with the George A. Wright Memorial Award for her community and church work in Tift County. She was the first woman so honored. She was the first president of the Tifton Pilot Club; she organized the Tifton Junior Woman’s Club; she was a charter member and past president of the Azalea Garden Club.
Mrs. Pittman received the Distinguished Service Award from the Tifton Council of Garden Clubs and was made a life member of the Garden Clubs of Georgia. She was active in Medical Auxiliary work, serving three terms as State First Vice-president and was a state board member for 30 years. She was made one of the first two honorary members of the State Medical Auxiliary. She was the author of two volumes of the History of Medicine in Tift County from 1872-1990.
Mrs. Pittman was the past Regent of the Tallahassee Chapter of the DAR, a member of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims and Daughters of the American Colonists. She was past Chapter President, past State President and member of the National Board of the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century. She was an annual invitee to the Georgia Women of Achievement Induction Ceremony.
Mrs. Pittman was the past president of the United Methodist Women, served on the administrative board of the church and was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. She was Church Historian for 21 years and was the author of the Centennial History of the First United Methodist Church of Tifton in 1982. She taught in her church for 52 years.
Mrs. Pittman served three terms as chairman of the Tifton-Tift County Library Board during which time the addition was made that nearly doubled the library’s size.
Mrs. Pittman is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dr. Carl S. Pittman Jr.; three children Alice Pennington and her husband Donnie of Fitzgerald, Charlie Pittman and wife Mallery of Charlotte, N.C., and John Pittman, M.D., of Raleigh, N.C.; her four grandchildren, Carl Pennington and his wife Heather of Kennesaw, David Pennington and his wife Tara of Palm Bay, Fla., Claire PIttman Roberts and her husband Taylor and Reese Pittman of Charlotte, N.C.; her four great -grandchildren, Abby and Reece Pennington and Hope and Brett Pennington; a sister-in-law, Jean Pittman Moore of South Hill, Va., and a brother-in-law, Aldine A. Rosser of Hannibal, Mo.

Ruth Cook Hitchcock
TIFTON — Ruth Cook Hitchcock, 88, of Tifton, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Elder Lee Chambers will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.
Brent Ireland, Timmy Domingue, Roger Walker Jr., Reid Jones, Darrell Benson and Roger Walker will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Tift Regional Medical Center Auxiliary will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Hitchcock was born on April 16, 1916, in Chula. She was the daughter of James Dawson Cook and Tempie Ritchey Cook, both deceased. Her husband, Warren B. Hitchcock, also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hitchcock was a Pink Lady at Tift Regional Medical Center and a member of Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hitchcock is survived by a son, Jimmy Hitchcock of Tifton; a daughter, Harlene Addison of Fayetteville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

T.P. Anderson
TIFTON — T. P. Anderson, 75, of Tifton, died Sunday, February 6, 2005, at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at the chapel of Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors. The Rev. Jerry Lillard and Harold Chambers will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.
Hugh Chandler, Paul McLemore, Nicholas Mitchell, Larry Hankin, Phillip Hankin, Ralph Chambers, Randy Greer and George Ayscue will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Anderson was born on August 7, 1929, in Chatsworth. He was the son of Lee Roy Anderson and Viola Priscilla Bellieu Anderson, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by one son, Timothy Patrick Anderson, and one brother, Lee Roy Anderson, Jr.
Mr. Anderson retired as plant manager of Tifton Aluminum. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Tifton, and a lifetime member of the Tifton Elks Lodge. He enjoyed gardening and sports, especially hunting and fishing.
Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Margaret M. Anderson of Tifton; a daughter, Janice Anderson Thornton Ridge of High Point, NC; two grandsons, Timothy A. Thornton of Douglasville and Trey Ridge of High Point, N.C.; a sister, Welvilee Worthington of Cedartown; and several nieces and nephews.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Tifton, Memorial Fund.

Green Baker
CROSLAND — Addie Rebecca Green Baker, 93, of Crosland, died Feb. 7, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crosland Baptist Church. The Rev. Jackie Cabiness will officiate. Burial will follow at Crosland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Harrell Faircloth Funeral Home in Moultrie.
Joey Roberts, Sonny Baker, Don Roberts, Milan Waggoner, Trey Dennis, Matthew Dennis and Mike Pearce will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Baker was born on Jan. 5, 1912, in Irwin County. She was a homemaker and a very loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Mrs. Baker was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Green. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Warren Clark; her second husband, Bobbie Baker; a son, Warren Clark; a daughter, Imogene Clark; five sisters, Winnie Lapov, Maude Roland, Lena Walker, Rubye Goins and Annie Tucker; and five brothers, Bernard, Ollie, Bollie, Joe and John Green.
Survivors include two daughters, LaVerne D. Rogers of Moultrie and Rebecca B. Jordan, both of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Wiley Clark of Norman Park; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. She was also survived by a special grand-godson, Ty Barber of Tifton.

Melba Taylor Thomley
WILMINGTON, N.C.–Melba Taylor Thomley, 78, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Davis Healthcare Center in Wilmington.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Lutheran Church of the Reconciliation. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Thomley was preceded in death by her husband, Roy L. Thomley, Sr. Survivors include children Barbara Hord, Roy “Buddy” L. Thomley Jr., and his wife Lois and Renee T. Jones and her husband, Richard. Grandchildren are Heather Hord, Ashley Hord, Corey Jones, Christopher Thomley, Arik Jones and Sister Gaynelle “Polly” Taylor Cook.
Mrs. Thomley was a longtime member of Lutheran Church of the Reconciliation ELCA. She retired from the New Hanover County School System, where she managed several school cafeterias. Gardening was her hobby as well as cooking, which she did extremely well according to her family. She considered cooking a favorite pastime as was published in the Wilmington Star News on Sunday, Feb. 27, 1977. Mrs. Thomley said, “The kitchen is women’s domain. Cooking to me is a hobby, that’s why I put so much into it.”
