Rant and Rave for August 5, 2004

It’s already here

“People need to get their heads out of the sand. There’s already liquor in Tift County. We might as well get revenue from it. Tift County has always been known as the wettest dry county in the state.”

Not the same thing

“African and American are nationalities, not races.”

Money could be used

“Tift County is in good shape without alcohol? In order for a kid in this town to participate in the recreation department, they have to pay a fee and there are a lot of underprivileged kids who can’t play basketball, softball or football because they can’t even pay the fee to play. How can you say we are in better shape? This revenue money from the alcohol sales could be used by the recreation department, which would help a whole bunch of kids that want to participate in sports and can’t.”

Need his experience

“It is reassuring and a blessing to know that Sen. Kerry has a plan for keeping our country safe from terrorists and that he has a plan also for bringing our participation in the war in Iraq to a successful conclusion. His experience in Vietnam as a battle-scarred veteran is what we need most in the White House right now.”

Not dry, not smoky

“Tifton is about to see to it that we’ll able to drink and get drunk but we won’t be able to smoke.”

Bad supporters

“I’ve got a Rant and a Rave. I’ve got a Rant for disregarding Dean’s doubt in the Tuesday’s paper and I’ve got a Rave for President Bush. At least he’s got some decent people that go around talking, supporting him, instead of people like Moore, like Ronnie Reagan, a proclaimed atheist. And you keep on naming them. You see them on TV all the time, talking their trash. The far left, you got that right. They’re so far out there they’re in a different world.”

Off the roads

“Whether we have whiskey in Tift County or not, a drink doesn’t bother me one way or the other. I haven’t had a drink in many years. But I can tell you now that if you have a bar where you get whiskey by the drink and have it, I’d say at the reliable motels and hotels where people could come in and have drinks and then maybe have a room where they could go and sleep it would get the drunks off the road. I recall when we were in the Army and they wouldn’t let you have whiskey in the wall lockers, we’d go out and buy a bottle and we’d drink the stuff before we got back to camp because we knew we couldn’t have it. After they started letting you have the bottle people would have a few drinks and keep it in the lockers. So they kept the drunks off the highway.”

No smoking ban

“I can’t understand why the government – city, state, federal – is trying to regulate every move we make. This bothers me about the smoking ban in Tifton because I do a lot of trading in Tifton and I can certainly find a city that does not have a smoking ban where I can do my shopping from here on out. Now, if they don’t let us use their facilities and have a smoking area for us, then I don’t think we should allow that city to use the taxes from the cigarettes.”
