Mary Sue McGill Polk

MCDONOUGH — Mary Sue McGill Polk, 88, of McDonough, died Sunday, July 9, 2007, at the Sacred Journey Hospice in McDonough.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at McDonough First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dana Everhart, the Rev. Mack Riley and the Rev. Michael Broome officiating. Interment will follow at McDonough City Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Polk was born in 1919 in Tift County to the late James Eddie and Lola Cordelia Clegg McGill. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Claud Oliver “Jack” Polk in 2003, and by brothers Millard and Harold McGill. She taught school in Chula and Omega and retired from the Henry County Board of Education, having taught for 29 years.

Mrs. Polk was a life member of McDonough First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association, the Sunshine Club, the Samaritan Sunday School class and the Ada Newnan/Bertha Bunn Circle. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling and her grandchildren. She will also be fondly remembered for her cooking and especially her chocolate pound cake.

Mrs. Polk’s survivors include her children, Wesley and Lana Polk of Columbus, Charles and Sue Polk of Jackson and Jane Brannan of McDonough; grandchildren Michael, David, Erica, Brian and Steven Polk, Amy Brannan and Jill Yevick; great-grandchildren Grace Yevick, Skylar Sears, Logan, Matthew, Olivia and Katelyn Polk; sister Doris Jones; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Janet McGill, all of Tifton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the McDonough First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 151 Macon St., McDonough, GA, 30253 in memory of Mrs. Polk.
