TIFTON — Charles Mack Sumner, 71, of Tifton, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Tift Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Glenn Martin officiating.

Mr. Sumner was born Feb.10, 1938, in Tifton, to Lee Roy and Lillian McMillan Sumner, deceased. He was an educator teaching at Norman Baptist College and Tift County High School for over 30 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was past vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees and worked with the youth group. He was an Outstanding Young Educator at Norman College and the director of the Honors Program. He was the past vice chairman of the United Way, and past director of the South West Georgia Easter Seals. He was the advisor for the Youth League for Christ at the Tift County High School.

Mr. Sumner is survived by his wife, Mary Wood Sumner, to whom he was married for 46 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Suzanne Sumner, of Montgomery, Ala., grandchildren Samuel, Andrew, Sarah, Joanna, Joshua, Jonathon and Abigail Sumner; daughter and son-in- law, Laurie and Danny Oldham, of Nashville, Tenn., grandchild Will Oldham; daughter and son-in-law Lynda and Richard Fisher of Tifton; grandchildren James, Daniel, Matthew and Sophia Fisher; one brother, Robert Rex Sumner of Smyrna and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

His body was donated to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta for medical research. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Brother Charlie’s Rescue Mission in Tifton or the Methodist Home for Children and Youth at P.O. Box 2525, Macon, GA, 31203.
