The great-nephew of a woman robbed and shot to death in her home two years ago was found guilty by a Tift County Superior Court jury Friday night.
Layton Kiev Lester, 15 at the time of his arrest, was charged with felony murder and armed robbery. He was tried as an adult by a jury that was picked Thursday morning. He will be sentenced later.
Lorrine Bozeman, who was 66 at the time of her death, lived at 917 Collins St. According to articles that ran in the Tifton Gazette in May 2007, Bozeman was found dead of a gunshot wound in an apparent home invasion robbery.
Shurrod Kareen Rich, 18 at the time, was arrested several days later and charged with murder and aggravated assault in the case. He has yet to stand trial on his charges. Rodney L. King, 17 at the time, was arrested the same day and charged with theft by receiving stolen property. Investigators said King had an undisclosed amount of money believed to have been stolen from Bozeman’s home. He has yet to be tried on his charges related to the case.
Several days later, Neddrick Marcusique Green, 22 at the time, was arrested and was also charged with murder in the case. The charges of murder were later dropped for lack of evidence, but he was charged and indicted by a grand jury in May 2007 on charges of hindering the apprehension of a criminal. The indictment reads that Green “concealed a .45 caliber High Point semi-automatic pistol, evidence of a crime, with the intention to hinder the apprehension of Shurrod K. Rich and Layton Lester, persons he had reasonable grounds to believe had committed a felony …”
Green pleaded not guilty to the charge in May 2007 and, according to records, his bond was set at $10,000 in October and then reduced to $5,000 in December. Green was charged in August 2008, along with two others, with the murder of Barry Bullard.
