Your Opinion: Freedoms vs. responsibilities

Published 9:40 pm Thursday, August 20, 2009

The American Constitution grants personal freedoms for all Americans. Nevertheless, each liberty results in a responsibility for every American.

The freedoms and responsibilities for Americans are:

FREEDOM: Freedom of religion.  RESPONSIBILITY: Give religious liberties to all Americans.

FREEDOM: Free speech. RESPONSIBILITY: Give free speech to all Americans; refrain from using slander and libel.

FREEDOM: Free press. RESPONSIBILITY: Fair and impartial news stories should be written by reporters in newspapers, magazines, TV and radio talk shows.

FREEDOM: Freedom of assembly. RESPONSIBILITY: Have peaceful protests against the government.

FREEDOM: Right to bear arms. RESPONSIBILITY: Use safety standards; obey licensing rules and regulation laws.

FREEDOM: Right to vote. RESPONSIBILITY: Be informed about politics by reading viewpoints. Vote in every election.

FREEDOM: Right to choose vocations; right to be an apathetic person. RESPONSIBILITY: Be loyal and dedicated workers. Have a strong work ethic.

FREEDOM: Due process given to people accused of crimes. RESPONSIBILITY: Serve on juries.

FREEDOM: Petition legislators to repeal laws. RESPONSIBILITY: Obey all laws; urge repeal of unjust laws.

FREEDOM: Free public schools. RESPONSIBILITY: Seek excellence in all educational opportunities.

How should Americans rank with their moral obligations? High. Average. Low.

Think carefully and please come up with honest answers..

In conclusion, a wise political thinker said, “The way for evil to win is for good people to do nothing.” Yes! Get involved in politics on the local, state, and national levels. Pray for President Obama and Congress to make the right decisions. Of course, Christians are urged to pray DAILY for all leaders (Romans: 13-1-5; Titus: 3:1-2) and not only pray because Obama has been elected President or that America is facing a severe financial crisis.
