Dr. Jeff Slocum

Dr. Jeffrey Alan Slocum Sr., 61, of Tifton, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at Northside Baptist Church in Tifton with Dr. Fred Evers, Jay Slocum, Mike Chason, Aaron Gibbs and Ryan Byrnes officiating.  A private family interment will be held at a later time.  The family will receive friends at Northside Baptist Church from 12-1:30 p.m. Thursday prior to the service.

Joe Pope, Jimmy Palmer, Marion Lightfoot, Steve Cunningham, Harold Bowling and Terry Graham will serve as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Georgia Chiropractic Association, Darrell Osborne, Randy Thompson, Tommy Ganas and Sandy Sims.

Dr. Slocum was born Dec. 11, 1951, in Lowndes County to Joseph R.  Slocum Sr., who survives, and resides in Valdosta, and the late Pauline Peacock Slocum.

A 1970 graduate of Valdosta High School, Dr. Slocum also graduated from Valdosta State College in 1975 where he was a member of the tennis team.  In 1978 he graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic.  Dr. Slocum practiced chiropractic for 30 years and was the owner of Slocum Chiropractic in Tifton.  He was a member of the Georgia Chiropractic Association, where he served as President of the Political Action Committee and was appointed by the governor to serve on the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners.  He was selected as the Georgia Chiropractor of the Year in 2005.  Dr. Slocum enjoyed fishing and playing golf.  He also loved animals, many kinds of music and playing with his grandchildren.   As a member of Northside Baptist Church in Tifton, he taught the Senior Boys Sunday School Class and worked in the Youth Department.  Dr. Slocum loved God’s Word and studied it daily.

In addition to his father, Dr. Slocum is survived by his wife, Kay Payne Slocum of Tifton; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Katie and Joey Richter of Brooklet, Julie and Erik von Hellens of Thomasville and Claire and Ryan Byrnes of Tifton; one son, Jeffrey Alan “Jay” Slocum Jr., of Aiken, S.C.; seven grandchildren, John Alan Richter, Niklas von Hellens, Jakob von Hellens, Kate von Hellens,  Klaire von Hellens, Davis Byrnes and Stella Byrnes; and two brothers and one sister-in-law, Jody and Beth Slocum of Cordele and Scott Slocum of Valdosta.
