Pet microchip clinic offered
VALDOSTA, Ga. — BARC Humane Society holds a pet microchip clinic at O’Steen Volkswagen, 4140 North Valdosta Road, from 9 a.m.-noon, June 18. Veterinarian Dr. Amanda Perry of Piney Woods Veterinary Clinic will be available to insert microchips at a reduced rate of $25, according to BARC. The service includes the microchip, insertion, and enrollment in a recovery service. Tags alone can get lost or be removed and microchipping is an easy way to permanently I.D. your pet, according to BARC. To increase the chance pets can be reunited with their owners, if lost, BARC Humane Society and AKC Reunite are providing pet owners with a more permanent way to I.D. their pets, according to organizers. The joint effort is an initiative to get pets microchipped and enrolled in AKC Reunite’s recovery program. Perry will microchip pets at the clinic. The tiny rice-sized I.D. is encoded with a unique number and implanted just under the skin in the scruff of the neck. The process is simple and only takes a few seconds, according to BARC. The chip can later be detected and read by a scanner used by shelters, veterinarians, and other agencies. At the microchip clinic, participants will be provided with an AKC Reunite enrollment form. Participants “will immediately fill out the form and enroll your pet in AKC Reunite’s 24-hour recovery service,” according to organizers. “This will ensure that you can be contacted when your pet is reported found.” Pet owners should keep the information current. If moving or getting a new phone number, notify AKC Reunite immediately (800) 252-7894, according to organizers.
