TIFTON — A Tifton man was charged with false imprisonment July 30 after an off-duty officer responded to a domestic dispute on Marion Drive.

According to an incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, Sgt. Ferron Yi, who was off duty, reported that while at her residence, two Hispanic males knocked on her door and said they needed a police officer in reference to a domestic dispute.

The subjects informed Yi that the male subject was running down the street chasing his female companion after a verbal and physical dispute. Yi told the two men to contact 911 to notify on-duty officers and then she ran outside where she made contact with the offender, 22-year-old Javier De’Jesus Urquiza.

She reported that the female victim was crying and not wearing any shoes. Urquiza began yelling that everything was fine and that they were just talking. Yi separated the two and stood by until on-duty officers arrived on the scene.

Urquiza began talking very loudly and using profanity. He was trying to speak to the victim despite Yi’s multiple verbal commands not to speak to her.

After several times telling Urquiza not to speak to the victim and with him using profanity, saying that he had a freedom of speech and that he could do whatever he wanted to since he was a homeowner, Yi told Urquiza that just because he owned a house, he didn’t have the right or authority to engage in a verbal and physical altercation with another person, nor was he allowed to yell and cuss in the middle of the street. She also said although she was currently off duty, her assistance was requested by neighbors and she was going to protect her community whether or not she had a uniform on.

Urquiza said he understood and that he would do as he was told. Yi reported that Urquiza was intoxicated, noting she could smell an alcoholic beverage and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot.

Yi’s fiancé also assisted throughout the entire incident by keeping the parties separated until on-duty officers arrived.

The victim said she and Urquiza were arguing and he wanted her to call his sister and tell her to stay out of their business. She said they had been living together for approximately five months and she was 11 weeks pregnant with his child. Since she refused to call his sister, she said he told her that he would beat her until she had a miscarriage. He then told her that he wanted her cell phone and that he wanted her to leave the residence.

The victim said Urquiza continued to follow her around the residence and continued to be verbally aggressive toward her. She attempted to leave the residence and he followed her out the door. She reported that he grabbed her by the arm and pulled on her. She then told two subjects in the area to call the police.

The victim said Urquiza threw her phone and completely shattered it. She then left the scene and began walking down the road to get away from him, but he followed her.

When a friend drove up to her so that she could get in the car, Urquiza prevented her from getting in the vehicle and grabbed her by the arm and pulled her away from the vehicle, the victim reported. He then slammed the car door so that she could not get in and began pulling her away. Witnesses in the area also gave the same account of the incident.

Urquiza was charged with battery (family violence), criminal trespass (family violence), false imprisonment (family violence), terroristic threats and acts (family violence), public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

In another matter, an armed robbery was reported July 26 on West 17th Street. Sgt. Jared Godwin reported that he responded to Matt Wilson Elementary School in reference to subjects with a gun trying to take a bicycle.

Upon arrival, he met with a group of juveniles. One subject said his friend was riding his bicycle next to the school when three black male juveniles came up and took the bicycle.

The male said he went up to the subjects and took his friend’s bicycle back. As he did this, one of the males pulled out a silver handgun and pointed it at him and a second male told him to shoot him if he doesn’t give them the bicycle.

The male said he then took off on the bicycle and took it to his grandmother’s house.

The report states that there were two arrests for criminal attempt.
