Part of new Highway 133 open for traffic

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Traffic was flowing Sunday on all four lanes of Highway 133 through Moultrie. The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Saturday that the first section of the widening project was complete except for some signage and road striping. The DOT is widening or reconstructing a total of 66 miles of the highway from Brooks to Dougherty counties. The 4.5-mile section in Moultrie was already four lanes, but the project added a center turn lane, underground drainage, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, pedestrian signals and wheelchair ramps. A project in southern Brooks County has been extended; it should be finished by the end of the year, the DOT said. Three other projects that complete the Moultrie-to-Valdosta stretch are expected to be done at varying times in 2018. Four projects from Moultrie to Albany were discussed at public information sessions last week; officials there said right-of-way acquisition for those could start in as little as six months.
