South Georgia expect ‘uneventful’ weather
VALDOSTA, Ga. — South Georgia should see a fairly quiet week on the weather scene, which may not be entirely good, according to at least one forecaster. Skies should be partly sunny for most of the week with highs ranging from the mid to upper 80s, according to the National Weather Service’s Valdosta forecast. “(The week) should be relatively uneventful,” said Ricardo Humphries, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office. Daytime highs are running above normal, with the usual average for Valdosta for this time of year around 79 degrees, Humphries said. He said there would be a slight chance of showers — 20 percent — Wednesday and Thursday. Rain is where the flip side of sunny skies and warm temperatures occurs. South Georgia is running a sizable rainfall deficit for 2017, said Frank Strait, senior meteorologist for the private forecasting firm AccuWeather. “The first three weeks of the year were fairly wet,” he said. “Then someone turned the hose off.” Since Feb. 1, Valdosta has only seen 4.32 inches of rain — less than half of the normal 10.7 inches, Strait said. A cold front that might otherwise bring showers to the area is expected to stall out to the north early in the week, he said. The soonest he said the area can expect a real chance of rain comes Sunday and Monday, when a “fairly substantial” storm system is expected to move across the Southeast. While neither meteorologist expected severe weather during the work week, Strait said the storms coming through Sunday and Monday could bring thunderstorms and the potential for high winds. “And the storms could bring rain and we need that,” he said.
Sporting clays fundraiser accepting registrations
TIFTON, Ga. — The 15th Annual Champions of Hope Sporting Clays Tournament will be held April 22. The tournament, which is the main fundraiser for Ruth’s Cottage and The Patticake House, will be at Green Lakes Hunting and Fishing Club, located at 127 Phlox Road in Ocilla. The course is 15 stations along a one and a half mile course. Participants may choose to compete individually or as a team, and they have a par of 100 shots, with less shots taken giving a better score. There is a participation limit of 22 teams of four per session. There are two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Participants are asked to provide their own eye protection as well, but hearing protection will be provided should anyone forget to bring that. Shells will also be available for purchase. Prizes are awarded for best shooter in the male, female and youth categories. Participants are also classed by skill level, so that inexperienced shooters are not directly competing against skilled ones. Each participant will get a goodie bag as well, and breakfast and lunch are being provided for the participants. Breakfast and morning registration begins at 8 a.m., and the morning session will begin at 9:30 a.m. Lunch and afternoon registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the afternoon session beginning at 1:30 p.m. Entry fees are $100 per individual and $400 for a four person team. Entries are due by April 19. For more information call (229) 387-9697.
CGTC SkillsUSA competitors take home nine medals
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Thirty-two Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) students recently competed in the SKillsUSA Georgia State Conference and Competition held March 23-25 in Atlanta, taking home a total of nine medals. The medals, which included two gold, two silver and five bronze, were earned in competitions against approximately 500 other technical college students from around the state in various areas including leadership, health, trade and other technical competitions. Lead advisor, Jeff Cope, along with English instructor, Melissa Williams, and three new advisors, Lonnie Cook, instructor of air conditioning technology, Antonio Shelley, program chair for industrial systems, instrumentation and controls, and Lisa Stephens, clinical coordinator for radiologic technology and former competitor and state officer for SkillsUSA, were unsure of what to expect prior to the event, but said having nine students place in the competition is evidence of the study and practice students put in.
