TIFTON — The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence and the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College tennis teams are again pairing up for the fifth annual Rally for Reading.

This year’s rally will take place Feb. 4 (Feb. 11 in case of rain) at ABAC’s Red Hill Tennis Center. It is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and last through 4:30.

Rally for Reading will help endow the Terri Nalls Reading Angel Chair, which became the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence’s 17th chair in 2017.

Nalls was the media specialist at Charles Spencer Elementary from 1996-2017. She helped Tifton earn the title of Reading Capital of the World and also won the Tift County school system numerous grants.

To fully endow the chair $25,000 must be earned. Mike Brumby said $8,000 had been earned so far and he is hopeful of raising the full endowment by the end of the year.

He said $2,500 was raised at last year’s Rally for Reading.

“We would love to that again,” he said.

Rally for Reading will be an afternoon of doubles matches, with players paired with ABAC players. ABAC head tennis coach Dale White is also a part of Rally for Reading and Brumby said White was excited for this year’s event.

The entry fee is a $100 donation to the Terri Nalls “Reading Angel” Chair endowment. If someone wants to donate, but not play, they can sponsor a player for the same donation.

Entries are limited to the first 36 players.

Brumby said Nalls has sponsored a player. She will also be in attendance. Brumby has also promised some special guests and is hopeful for an appearance from Ricki Reader.
