TIFTON — The Tifton Police Department is warning the community about counterfeit bills being circulated in the area.
There have been two recent instances of fake bills being found, according to a press release from the TPD.
Lieutenant Lee Dunston with the TPD Criminal Investigation Division said that a $10 bill recovered at a local school appears real enough at first glance. Upon closer inspection the word “REPLICA” appears in several places on the bill and the bill also has “THIS IS NOT LEGAL, IT IS TO BE USED FOR MOTION PICTURES” on it.
In another incident, 16 fake $100 bills were recovered.
According to the release, these bills all had pinkish colored, Chinese writing on them. They are missing some key security features and are relatively easy to determine as fake if examined closely.
“Basic internet research reveals that these type fakes have been around for a few years and have been passed all over the country,” Dunston said in the release. “Supposedly, they are used in bank teller training in China and can be bought via the internet in bundles of 100. Since there were 16 taken in this incident, that potentially leaves 84 more in our area.
“These are not the best fakes I have seen but, if you do not examine them, you may become a victim,” he added.
